On October 8th, the fourth annual “Hope, not fear” Breast Cancer Community Forum was held at Yale’s West Campus in Orange, CT. Sponsors included Yale Cancer Center, Yale-New Haven Breast Center, and the West Haven Breast Cancer Awareness Program. Over 150 breast cancer survivors, family members, and friends attended, along with breast cancer advocacy groups, healthcare providers, and individuals interested in improving the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
Shirley Pinette, a manager in the Yale-New Haven Breast Center, helped to organize the event. “We were very pleased with the fourth annual “Hope, not fear,” breast cancer forum and the large turnout that we had. The speakers, audience, and advocacy groups were able to communicate in a way that was beneficial for everyone,” she said.
The purpose of this symposium was to educate and update breast cancer survivors, their families, and members of the community on the latest advances in the detection, treatment, and prevention of breast cancer. Speakers included Dr. Thomas J. Lynch, Jr., Director of Yale Cancer Center and Physician-in-Chief of the new Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven, Honorable John M. Picard, the Mayor of the City of West Haven, and several Yale physicians.
Topics covered during the discussions ranged from nutrition and a healthy lifestyle for breast cancer survivors, to the pathology of breast cancer. Breast Cancer Advocacy Groups in attendance passed out information and answered questions. The American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen for the Cure— CT Chapter, and Nubian Sisters were just some of the many groups.
“We look forward to continuing and improving upon this program next year. The personal perspectives from breast cancer survivors, and the information that is shared and discussed among survivors and physicians, is part of what makes this program so worthwhile to all in attendance,” Pinette said.
