Dr. Mel’s Connecticut Climate Book,
by Dr. Mel Goldstein

Dr. Mel Goldstein, meteorologist for WTNH News Channel 8, has written his second book entitled Dr. Mel’s Connecticut Climate Book, to be released this month.  Dr. Mel’s first book was The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Weather (1999).  Proceeds from his second book, as proceeds from the first did, will support the Dr. Mel Goldstein Multiple Myeloma Research Fund at Yale Cancer Center.

In Dr. Mel’s second book, published by Wesleyan University Press, he explains how the weather in the state of Connecticut changes from season to season.  The book also delivers an account of Connecticut’s weather history over the past three centuries.  Blizzards, cold snaps, thunderstorms, tornadoes, floods, and hurricanes are included among many topics and stories discussed about Connecticut’s weather.  He also discusses Connecticut’s most famous historical storms and includes photographs, charts, and weather patterns.

Dr. Mel was diagnosed with multiple myeloma 13 years ago. When he was diagnosed the median survival for his disease was 33 months.  Over the past 13 years Dr. Mel has accomplished many goals towards fighting this disease.  He established the Dr. Mel Goldstein Multiple Myeloma Fund at Yale Cancer Center; he takes part in Yale Cancer Center’s annual Cancer Survivors Day; and he raises awareness about the disease and the importance of cancer research throughout the region.  The Dr. Mel Goldstein Multiple Myeloma Fund is dedicated to funding research on multiple myeloma and establishing new treatment options for this incurable blood disease.

Connecticut Magazine has selected Dr. Mel as the “Best in Connecticut On-Air Meteorologist” for nine consecutive years, and he was inducted into their Hall of Fame.  The National Academy of TV Arts and Sciences recently presented him with their twenty-five year Silver Circle Award for performance and public service.

As a well-known meteorologist in the state, Dr. Mel has become a trusted figure not only for reporting the weather, but also for giving hope to all patients and families battling multiple myeloma, as well as other chronic disorders.  With the proceeds from his book going to benefit Yale Cancer Center, it will open up the opportunity for further research to be done, and contribute to a better understanding of this disease.
