New Haven, Conn. — Dr. Thomas Lynch, Jr., MD, Director of Yale Cancer Center, recently appointed Michael Hurwitz, MD, PhD Assistant Professor of Medicine at Yale Cancer Center.

“Michael’s strengths in basic cancer research will complement our efforts to expand the efforts of the cancer biology group at Yale Cancer Center.  We are happy to have his clinical expertise in genitourinary cancers as part of the Prostate and Urologic Cancers Program,” Lynch said.

Dr. Hurwitz will focus his study into the role of the protein Abl tyrosine kinase in cell migration, cell morphology, and cell death using C. elegans.  Abl has been identified as a central component of cancer biology and metastasis.

In addition to his research responsibilities, Dr. Hurwitz will be an active member of the Yale Cancer Center Prostate and Urologic Cancers Program and will care for patients with genitourinary cancers.   Before joining Yale Cancer Center, Dr. Hurwitz was an Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an Attending Physician in Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.

A graduate of Harvard College, Dr. Hurwitz received his doctorate degree in cell biology from Rockefeller University and his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College.   He completed his fellowship in oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and a postdoctoral fellowship in biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Yale Cancer Center is one of a select network of 40 comprehensive cancer centers in the country designated by the National Cancer Institute and the only one in Southern New England. Bringing together the resources of Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Yale University School of Medicine, its mission encompasses patient care, research, cancer prevention and control, community outreach and education.
