| Yale Cancer Center Retreat Our annual retreat was a wonderful success thanks to all of the members who attended on Monday. I am especially grateful to the 18 presenters who gave excellent summaries of the exciting research currently underway in Yale Cancer Center laboratories. Each of our shared resource leaders also presented posters from their cores. Their work illustrates the huge impact these services make on successful research projects at Yale Cancer Center.
Michael Seiden, MD, PhD, President and CEO of Fox Chase Cancer Center presented his vision for Building and Stewarding Cancer Centers during the keynote address. His insights and valuable advice will be helpful to all of us as we continue to strengthen Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven in the coming years. For those of you who have asked, here is a link to the video segment he shared, "Did You Know?".
Cancer Survivors Day Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven will celebrate Cancer Survivors Day with our patients and their families on Wednesday, May 26th at Yale's West Campus. The evening will begin with a session in the auditorium, followed by a picnic supper and entertainment. Please encourage your patients to attend with their families. I hope to see many of the clinicians and caregivers in attendance as well.
To RSVP to attend, please email Kathleen Derringer.

Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program
The Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program strives to conduct cutting-edge research to identify the causes of human cancers, and then use behavioral and other approaches to translate these findings into public health interventions to reduce cancer incidence, cancer morbidity, and mortality.
The program is organized into two themes: 1. To elucidate the role of lifestyle factors and genetics in the etiology of cancer. - Nutrition, physical activity, obesity and cancer
- Environmental factors and cancer
- Molecular/genetic factors in cancer
- Racial disparities in cancer
- Cancer biostatistics methods research
2. To evaluate behavioral interventions for cancer prevention and control. - Cancer prevention/early detection behaviors
- Secondary prevention interventions in cancer survivors
- Symptom control/quality of life in cancer patients
- Palliative and end-of-life care for cancer patients
There are currently 32 members of the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program from seven different departments at Yale University. 23 of the members have NIH/NCI funding to support their research projects. The total cancer-related grant support for the program members in 2010 is just under $15 million.
