John Wysolmerski, MD received a Breast Cancer Idea Award from the
Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program for $375,000 to study the "Effects of Nuclear Parathyroid Hormone-Related Protein Signaling in Breast Cancer." The project will examine the effects of nuclear PTHrP signaling on the development and progression of tumors in MMMTV-Wnt 1 mice and use tissue microarray techniques to determine if nuclear PTHrP staining in primary breast tumors correlates witht he clinical outcome of breast cancer patients. The research will be done in collaboration with
Joshua VanHouten, PhD , and
David Rimm, MD, PhD .
Nita Maihle, PhD received a $75,000 grant from the
Harry J. Lloyd Charitable Trust to fund a pilot study entitled "A Preclinical Study of p45-sHER3: A Putative Metastasis Factor in Melanoma." The research will biologically characterize HER3, sHER3, and heregulin in melanocyte-derived cell lines. p45-sHER3 was discovered in Dr. Maihle's laboratory, and has been shown to be a key bone-specific metastasis factor in prostate cancer. Her collaborators on this study are Dr. Yingqun Huang and Ms. Ti Badri.
