| Dr. Edward Chu to Leave Yale Cancer Center It is with a mixture of excitement and disappointment that I share with you the news that Dr. Edward Chu will be leaving Yale Cancer Center to become the Deputy Director and Chief of the Division of Hematology/Medical Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. His new appointment takes effect on September 1. Ed has been a wonderful leader, advocate, and mentor at Yale Cancer Center over the last 6 years as Deputy Director of Yale Cancer Center and Chief of Medical Oncology. During this time he has made lasting contributions to our clinical cancer program and Cancer Center Support Grant efforts.
Ed has co-directed Yale Cancer Center's Developmental Therapeutics Program, along with Tommy Cheng, for 14 years. Their research endeavors and innovative collaborations have consistently received excellent review scores and serve as a model for other research programs at Yale Cancer Center. Ed is an expert in the organization and operation of cancer centers and serves on the NCI Cancer Centers Committee, which oversees the Cancer Centers Program.
An internationally known leader in colorectal cancer, Ed is the author of the
Physicians' Cancer Chemotherapy Drug Manual , founding editor-in-chief of the journal
Clinical Colorectal Cancer , and chairman of the
International Colorectal Congress .
Please join me in congratulating Ed as he moves on to a new challenge at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. He has been a fantastic asset to Yale Cancer Center over the last 14 years and his commitment, leadership, and friendship will be greatly missed.
Yale Cancer Center Membership The Yale Cancer Center membership committee recently updated the membership forms and application process to join the Center. There are two types of membership available, full and clinical. Full members are integrated into one of seven research programs based on their research and interests. In general, full members hold independent research funding or are principal investigators of Cancer Center Clinical Studies. Clinical members do not need to be affiliated with a research program but still participate in the research, education, and clinical mission of the Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital. Please note: current members do not need to reapply for membership.
For more information, please contact Dr. Edward Snyder.

Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program The
Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program Translational New Investigator Award
is new for fiscal year 2010 and supports the development of translational research partnerships between two independent investigators. Within the partnership, one member must be a laboratory scientist and the other must be a clinician. This award is intended to support a mentoring partnership between a new investigator and an established research program.
The
Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program Idea Award
is intended to promote the exploration of ideas that are still in the early stages of development yet have the potential to yield high-impact results and open new avenues of investigation. This mechanism supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancements. Preliminary data are not required. However, research projects should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on a strong scientific rationale.
A pre-application consisting of a two page narrative and biosketches is due July 14, 2010.
