AnnouncementsCloser to Free I am looking forward to seeing many of you next Saturday at the Closer to Free bike ride on September 8th at the Yale Bowl. As many of you are aware, the 2nd Annual Closer to Free Bike Ride supports outstanding patient care and cutting-edge research at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center. I would like to express my gratitude to those of you who have already committed to riding, volunteering, and supporting the hospital's signature fundraising event.
I would also like to personally invite all staff members and their families to join us at the Yale Bowl. There will be food, drinks, entertainment, and family activities taking place throughout the day as we celebrate the Closer to Free Bike Ride. A brief schedule of events is as follows:
6:45 AM: Opening Ceremonies
7:00 AM: Official start of the Ride, join us to send-off the riders!
9:30 AM & 3:00 PM: Kids' Fun Rides around the Yale Bowl
10:00AM - 5:00 PM: Celebrations at the Finish Line as riders return to the Yale Bowl
Public Affairs Resource for YCC and SCH Helen Dodson, a Communications Generalist for the Yale University Office of Public Affairs and Communications (OPAC), will begin a pilot program with Yale Cancer Center on Tuesday. Helen will be embedded within the cancer center organization and will meet with many of you over the coming months. Her emphasis will be on pitching and placing research and clinical stories to national media. She will attend various forums and meetings within YCC. Please join me in welcoming Helen to Yale Cancer Center. Preston C. Sprenkle, MD Joins Urology Peter Schulam and I are pleased to announce that Dr. Preston Sprenkle has accepted a position in the Department of Urology as an Assistant Professor. Preston recently completed a fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. His research efforts are focused on exploring the role of b7x as a marker for prostate cancer and he will spend time both in the lab and in our clinics. Preston is a graduate of Stanford University and received his MD from Columbia University. Please join us in welcoming him to Yale Cancer Center.
Yale Cancer Center Grand Rounds Begin September 11 Our Grand Rounds series will begin for the fall semester on Tuesday, September 11th at noon in the auditorium at 55 Park Street. Notables Daniel DiMaio, MD, PhD, Scientific Director and Deputy Director of Yale Cancer Center has been appointed to a five year term on the Board of Scientific Advisors of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) by Dr. Harold Varmus, Director of the NCI. The Board assists and advises the Director of the Institute with a primary focus on oversight of the full portfolio of extramural programs of the NCI. The Board also provides advice on scientific policies and reviews concepts for research and research activities supported by the NCI. Clarence T. Sasaki, MD, has been named president of the American Laryngological Association (ALA). The ALA is one of the premier organizations in otolaryngology and is a major supporter of research, education, and academic issues related to laryngology, both benign and malignant. |

The Employee Profile recognizes the diverse contributions made by Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital staff have to meet our patient care, research, education, and outreach goals. The staff profiled are examples of the great work being done here, and the dedication and values we possess. To suggest someone to be profiled, please Diane Viveiros, LCSW on the 14th floor of Smilow, and in the Gynecologic Oncology Outpatient Clinic, has the knowledge and expertise to help patients and their families through the most difficult time of their lives, whether it is a new diagnosis of cancer, a recurrence, or the grief of knowing that end-of-life care may be necessary. Diane provides continuity of care and offers both supportive counseling and information about and referral to community resources that are available during the various stages of treatment. Diane commented that at some point during the treatment process, a patient may find that meeting with a social worker helps them deal with life issues that have arisen due to their cancer. Some women are referred by their physician, a PA, or a nurse, but Diane also identifies women who may have a high level of distress or challenges. While Diane believes everyone can use the help of a social worker at one time or another, there are some life circumstances that strongly indicate the need. For example, frail and isolated elders, women who are in the midst of childrearing or women struggling with substance abuse or mental illness are all situations that Diane assists with. "I work with the whole team to provide the best care possible to patients. Patients may bring something up with me that they have not yet discussed with their doctor, and find that talking with me helps them," Diane said. "I love my job and feel that I am using the gifts that I was given in the best way I can." Diane also co-chairs the Social Work Department's Service Excellence Committee. She is devoted to making sure the teams are working together the best way they can to support each other in caring for patients. Bonnie Indeck, LCSW, Manager of Oncology Social Work at Smilow Cancer Hospital, and Diane's manager commented, "We were very fortunate when Diane joined us in oncology. She provides whatever may be necessary to ensure that a patient and her family have what they need - she goes the extra mile, whatever it may take. Diane's service excellence style is a role model for all as witnessed by the positive feedback consistently received. It is a pleasure to work with Diane."

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network - AACR Grants The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network - AACR research grants program is designed to help incubate innovative research projects, grow the number of researchers dedicated to studying pancreatic cancer, nurture collaborations across disciplines and institutions, and expedite scientific progress for patient benefit.

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation Epidemiology Grants These grants are designed to support the research of investigators who have a specific focus on the epidemiology, early detection or the prevention of childhood cancer. ALSF will award support to established investigators who have a track record of peer-reviewed publications in relevant areas.
