Biography

Melissa Durand MD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology & Biomedical Imaging at the Yale School of Medicine. She is a breast imaging sub-specialist with a primary research role focused on breast cancer screening and diagnosis with Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT). As an attending physician at Smilow Cancer Hospital and several outpatient sites, she teaches residents and fellows and interprets a broad spectrum of breast imaging modalities including mammography, ultrasound, breast MRI and performs image-guided interventional procedures. She is the recipient of several industry grants and served as the Yale principal investigator of a multisite collaborative DBT research group that co-authored several landmark papers on DBT. She is also the recipient of a Lion Heart Pilot grant to evaluate the clinical performance of synthesized mammography, a form of DBT that would reduce radiation rates by almost 50%. Dr. Durand has presented her work at international, national and regional conferences and collaborated on several scientific manuscripts, review articles, and book chapters. Presently expanding her involvement in global outreach as breast imaging lead for RAD-AID Ghana and Yale Medical Liaison for Breast Imaging International Outreach, in her free time she is an avid skier and aspiring mountaineer.
