Biography

Dr. Priya Jamidar is one of the world’s leading experts in biliary and pancreatic disease treatment and research. He has made major contributions to the field including the endoscopic management of biliary disorders in pregnancy, treatment of pancreatitis and Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. He was an investigator in the EPISOD study which was paradigm changing in terms of evaluation and management of Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. He published one of the largest single center experiences on performing ERCP in pregnant patients. He has also been an investigator in high impact publications relating to the use of confocal endomicoscopy in evaluation of indeterminate biliary and pancreatic strictures

Dr. Jamidar received his medical degree from the Queens University of Belfast. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Connecticut Medical Center in Farmington, Connecticut. He then completed a Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He subsequently pursued advanced ERCP training at the world-renowned University of Indiana Medical Center under Dr. Glen Lehman, a leading pioneer and luminary in ERCP.

Following advanced ERCP training, Dr. Jamidar was recruited to UCLA Medical center in Los Angeles where he led and developed a tertiary referral program in Advanced Endoscopy. He then served as the Chief of Gastroenterology at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles one of the busiest referral centers for ERCP in the western United States

Dr. Jamidar was recruited in 2004 to lead the Advanced Endoscopy program at Yale University and Yale New Haven hospital and continues this now as Director of Endoscopy. Under his strong leadership the Advanced Endoscopy program has thrived and developed into one of the leading referral centers in the north eastern United States. He has authored numerous publications and is highly sought after as a speaker both nationally and internationally

Dr. Jamidar’s main clinical and research interests relate to endoscopic evaluation and management of pancreaticobiliary disorders. These include endoscopic management of chronic pancreatitis including pancreatic duct stones, strictures, pancreas divisum, ablative (intraducal RFA) and palliative treatment of pancreatic cancer and bile duct cancers, complex hilar stenting, cholangioscopy and lithotripsy for bile duct stones as well as ERCP with Sphincter of Oddi manometry. He also has expertise in Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) with fine needle aspiration and biopsy (FNA/FNB), pancreatic pseudocyst drainage, ampullectomy and pancreatoscopy.

He is currently involved in two important studies. One major study (the SHARP Trial) is a clinical trial of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography with minor papilla sphincterotomy (a.k.a., minor papillotomy) for patients with two or more episodes of acute pancreatitis and pancreas divisum, which is an anatomic variant where the pancreatic duct drains through a separate opening from the bile duct. This study is being conducted at more than 15 centers in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Netherlands with the support of an NIH cooperative agreement. To learn more about the SHARP Trial, please visit here . To visit the Clinical Trials study visit here.

A second important study is a longitudinal cohort of patients who undergo endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for idiopathic acute pancreatitis and sphincter of Oddi dysfunction (RESPOnD Study). The latter is a controversial medical condition believed to cause intermittent episodes of abdominal pain akin to “gallbladder spasms” or, less commonly, acute pancreatitis. Subjects enrolled in this study are being followed longitudinally to carefully measure the clinical impact of the endoscopic procedure.

Dr. Jamidar is amongst the most experienced ERCP practitioners in the world having personally performed more than 16,000 ERCP procedures

Dr. Jamidar is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology, has received numerous citations as a Best Gastroenterologist in Connecticut and the New York Metro area. He is the proud leader and team member of the Advanced Endoscopy team. He prides himself on his patient-centered care and is dedicated to providing patients with the best possible state of the art medical care.
