What is the purpose of this trial?
This study is called a clinical trial. A clinical trial is a research study involving treatment of a disease in human patients. This study is organized by Children’s Oncology Group (COG). COG is an international research group that conducts clinical trials for children with cancer. More than 200 hospitals in North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe are members of COG. You are being asked to take part in this research study because you have been diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma or a similar tumor called ectomesenchymoma. Rhabdomyosarcoma is a type of cancer that occurs in the soft tissues (like muscles). Your tumor is considered “high risk” because it has grown beyond the site where it started and has spread to other parts of your body. The term, risk, refers to the chance that treatment will not get rid of the cancer or that the cancer will come back after treatment. It is common to enroll children and adolescents with cancer in a clinical trial that seeks to improve cancer treatment over time. Clinical trials include only people who choose to take part. You have a choice between a standard treatment for rhabdomyosarcoma and this clinical trial. In order to decide whether or not you wish to be a part of this research study you should know enough about its risks and benefits to make an informed decision. This consent form gives you detailed information about the study, which a member of the research team will discuss with you. This discussion should go over all aspects of this research: its purpose, the procedures that will be performed, any risks of the procedures, possible benefits and possible alternative treatments. Once you understand the study, you will be asked if you wish to participate; if so, you will be asked to sign this form. Please take your time to make your decision. Discuss it with your friends and family. If the subject is your child, we encourage you to include her or him in the discussion and decision to the extent that she or he is able to understand and take part.Participation Guidelines
