Biostatistics

Biostatistics is a Shared Resource staffed by PhD and MS trained biostatisticians whose primary appointments at Yale are in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. Three programmatic areas of the YCC are supported by the Biostatistics Shared Resource: basic science, clinical science, and population science.

A full array of statistical consultation services are offered by the Biostatistics Shared Resource from conceptual framework and design of clinical or laboratory studies, through grant submission, data collections, quality assurance, interim safety analyses, and finally to manuscript preparation for publication. Results from the statistical analysis of laboratory and clinical data have led to numerous published collaborative scientific articles illustrating the Resource's contributions to these research efforts.

The Biostatistics Shared Resource provides assistance in writing of clinical trial protocols, especially, but not limited to, the Statistical Analysis sections and issues of patient safety. Dr. Zelterman serves on both the Yale Cancer Center Protocol Review Committee and the Yale Human Investigative Committee. As a result, the Resource's members are familiar with the regulatory as well as scientific issues in clinical research. The Biostatistics Shared Resource can help in planning interim analyses for efficacy as well as patient safety.

This shared resource has often been called upon in the planning and design of laboratory studies. The estimation of a necessary sample size and power is only a portion of its capabilities. The staff is experienced at design issues such as blocking and stratification; modeling, especially in survival and toxicity studies; and finally, the analysis and reporting of these results for publication.
