Research Summary

Nearly 30 years ago, I identified weight gain as a symptom of distress for women who were receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. This led to a series of descriptive studies on physical and psychological symptom distress with primary and adjuvant breast therapies. As survival rates improved, my research shifted to a focus on persistent and late effects of therapy, co-morbidities and interventions to improve survivor outcomes. I am completing an exercise intervention that targets physiologic outcomes (bone, body composition, cardiovascular function, metabolic risk factors), exploring the role of exercise and inflammatory cytokines in survivors and investigating potential predictors of cardiac damage in women who receive cardio-toxic adjuvant breast therapy.
