Three professors in the Yale School of Public Health’s Department of Biostatistics have been chosen to lead major national and international biostatistics organizations—a rare distinction that underscores the department’s standing as a global leader in pioneering research and statistical science.

Roy S. Herbst, MD, PhD, professor of medicine in medical oncology and chief of medical oncology at the Yale Cancer Center in New Haven, Connecticut, joined Oncology News Central (ONC) to reflect on the year’s developments.

Members of the Center for Breast Cancer at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center joined more than 11,000 physicians, scientists, and trainees focused on advancing research and clinical care in breast cancer attending the annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium December 10-14, 2024. The Symposium is designed to provide state-of-the-art information on the experimental biology, etiology, prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of breast cancer and premalignant breast disease to an international audience of academic and private physicians and researchers.

Melanie Morrill received a diagnosis of metastatic ALK+ lung cancer at age 50, and at the time the disease came with a life expectancy of 3-6 years. However, in the last ten years, advances and progress in lung cancer research have transformed what was a terminal diagnosis into a chronic disease controlled with oral medication.

Thazin Nwe Aung, PhD, Associate Research Scientist in Pathology, has been selected for a Patterson Mentored Research Award. Dr. Aung is a member of the Rimm Lab, and her mentor is David Rimm, MD, PhD, Anthony N. Brady Professor of Pathology and of Medicine (Medical Oncology).

Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital people who have been honored

The study by Yale Cancer Center (YCC) researchers at Yale School of Medicine (YSM) discovered that not all CD8+ T cells are allies in a body’s fight against cancer cells. In a new study, patients living with severe melanoma who had increased levels of suppressor, regulatory CD8+ T cells had worse survival outcomes.

Yale Cancer Center experts will discuss a variety of topics at SABCS ranging from novel therapeutics for HER2+ breast cancers, dosing optimization in breast cancer trials, and new findings on different genomic ancestries for advanced breast cancers.
