Coffee Chats: Building Connection Through Open Dialogue

December 12, 2024

In an effort to strengthen communication and connection within the department, the launch of the new Coffee Chats initiative introduces structured opportunities for candid, one-on-one conversations between department faculty and the Chair. These informal 20-minute meetings aim to provide faculty with a dedicated space to share feedback, celebrate successes, and propose ideas for enhancing the department’s culture and operations.

Coffee Chats were introduced as a supplement to the Faculty Development Annual Questionnaire (FDAQ) process, which already includes critical time for faculty to meet individually with their division chiefs. However, due to the department's exponential growth in recent years, it has become increasingly challenging for the Chair to meet one-on-one with every faculty member.

“Facetime with leadership is a critical component to fostering a culture of inclusivity and connection, particularly for newer members of the department, helping to ensure that every voice is heard,” said Department of Surgery Chair, Nita Ahuja MD, MBA.

While the division chief 1:1 meetings remain focused on professional development and career growth, Coffee Chats shift the focus toward faculty’s cultural experiences within the department and identifying department-level improvements that can broadly enhance the faculty experience.

Sessions are self-scheduled, with various morning and afternoon time slots posted on Qualtrics, allowing faculty to choose a time that works best for them. Participation is optional but strongly encouraged.
