Connecticut Emerging Infections Program Receives $19.5 Million Grant
The Connecticut Emerging Infections Program (EIP) at the Yale School of Public Health has received a five-year grant totaling approximately $19.5 million from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with an initial $3.9 million being awarded in the first year. Linda Niccolai, professor of epidemiology (microbial diseases) and associate dean for academic affairs, is the principal investigator.

Vermund appointed president of the Global Virus Network
Dr. Sten Vermund, MD, the Yale School of Public Health Anna M.R. Lauder Professor of Public Health and former dean of the school from 2017–2022, has been appointed president of the Global Virus Network. The GVN is a coalition comprised of eminent human and animal virologists from 71 centers of excellence and 9 affiliates in 40 countries, working collaboratively to advance knowledge about how to identify and diagnose pandemic viruses, mitigate and control how such viruses spread and make us sick, as well as develop drugs, vaccines, and treatments to combat them.

The new Yale Institute for Global Health (YIGH), approved by the Yale Corporation on Dec. 8, further advances President Salovey’s goal for the university to have a greater impact on complex international issues. Nature’s own nanoparticles harnessed to target disease
Using a novel form of immune-genetic therapy, researchers from Yale School of Medicine and the Jagiellonian University College of Medicine in Poland have successfully inhibited a strong immune allergic inflammatory response in the skin of mice. The results suggest the technique could be used to combat a variety of diseases.

6th Annual YIGH Global Health Case Competition Focuses on Strategies to Address Climate Change and Food Insecurity
On February 15th, students across Yale participated in the 6th annual YIGH Global Health Case Competition. During the competition, participating students are randomized into multidisciplinary teams. After receiving case materials, teams had two weeks to develop a proposal to address the challenge of climate change and food insecurity in the Ecuadorian Andes. Seven teams presented their proposals to a panel of judges on the day of the competition.
