Yale Cancer Center's Lifetime Achievement Award Presented to Ruth McCorkle
Ruth McCorkle, PhD, RN, FAAN, Florence Wald Professor of Nursing at Yale School of Nursing, Professor of Chronic Diseases at Yale School of Public Health and Assistant Director for Psychosocial Oncology at Yale Cancer Center, was presented with the Yale Cancer Center Lifetime Achievement Award at Yale Cancer Center’s annual Conclave, an award given annually to a Yale Cancer Center member who has impacted the field of oncology both nationally and internationally.

The new Yale Institute for Global Health (YIGH), approved by the Yale Corporation on Dec. 8, further advances President Salovey’s goal for the university to have a greater impact on complex international issues. Led by the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health, YIGH is a university-wide effort to address global health issues.

Radiation boost reduces local tumor recurrence for DCIS patients following WBRT
A supplemental “boost” of radiation improves local control and provides an incremental benefit in decreasing breast cancer recurrence for patients with Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) who receive whole breast radiation therapy radiation (WBRT) following lumpectomy, according to research presented today at the 58th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). Researchers concluded that use of a radiation boost should be considered in DCIS patients who have life expectancies of 10 or more years following breast-conserving surgery and WBRT.

The Gift of Saying Goodbye
One of the most heartbreaking aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it has prevented hospitalized patients from having visitors, leaving patients to die alone and depriving families of a chance to say goodbye to their loved ones. But the nurses and clinical staff on EP9-5, the infectious disease unit at Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH), have made it possible for many patients and families to actually have that final goodbye.
