Microglia-Mediated Neuroimmune Suppression in PTSD Is Associated With Anhedonia
A new study, led by researchers at Yale School of Medicine and the Veterans Affairs National Center for PTSD, utilized positron emission tomography imaging with [11C]PBR28, a radiotracer to measure 18-kDa translocator protein to better understand microglia, the resident immune cells in the brain of individuals with PTSD.

NeuroEXPLORER Images Unveiled at SNMMI
At the 2023 Annual Meeting of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging held in Chicago June 24-27, Richard Carson, Ph.D., presented the first human PET images acquired on the NeuroEXPLORER, an ultra-high performance brain PET imager. This system is currently being installed at Yale, and research PET imaging will begin in the coming weeks.

Yale Radiology and Psychiatry Researchers Join with Penn Medicine to Create a New Center to Study Opioid Use Disorders
Opioid use disorder has reached epidemic levels in the United States. Over the last two decades, opioid-related overdose deaths increased by more than 50 percent, with nearly 50,000 in 2018, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Researchers from Yale School of Medicine (YSM) and Penn Medicine, which comprises the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, have created a new center that focuses on neuroimaging to improve our understanding of opioid use disorders and find new treatments.

Lower synaptic density is associated with depression severity and network alterations
Sophie Holmes, PhD, Associate Research Scientist, and Irina Esterlis, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, are the first and senior authors, respectively, of a study published in Nature Communications that examined synaptic density in 26 patients with major depressive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. The research revealed evidence linking lower synaptic density to network alterations and symptoms of depression.

PET Imaging of Beta Cell Mass Featured in Journal of Nuclear Medicine
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is characterized by a loss of β-cells in the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas and subsequent deficient insulin secretion in response to hyperglycemia. Development of an in vivo test to measure β-cell mass (BCM) would greatly enhance the ability to track diabetes therapies.

Yale-developed test for Alzheimer’s disease directly measures synaptic loss
Yale researchers have tested a new method for directly measuring synaptic loss in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. The method, which uses PET imaging technology to scan for a specific protein in the brain linked to synapses, has the potential to accelerate research for new Alzheimer’s treatments, the researchers said. The study was published in JAMA Neurology.

At the opening plenary on Sunday, June 24, at 8:00 am, Richard E. Carson, PhD, will give the Henry N. Wagner, MD, Lecture on Quantitative Nuclear Imaging: Is SUV the Best We Can Do? Carson is professor of radiology, biomedical imaging and biomedical engineering at Yale University. He is also director of the Yale PET Center and director of graduate studies for Yale’s biomedical engineering program. His presentation will cover tracer kinetic analysis methods used for quantitative brain imaging applications, with a focus on synaptic density imaging, why SUV works as well as it does for FDG oncology studies, and imaging challenges faced in non-brain dynamic studies. The Wagner Lectureship commemorates Henry N. Wagner, Jr., MD, a pioneer in nuclear medicine and international leader in the field for more than half century.

Exploring the secret life of house sparrows with the aid of a 3D printer
Since it was introduced to North America in the late 19th century, the house sparrow has received little love. “Nothing can be urged in its favor,” declared an 1891 editorial in the New York Times. A few years later, the same newspaper deemed the birds “rats in the air.” Adding insult to injury, the International Union for Conservation of Nature has long kept the house sparrow on its unceremonious list of species of “least concern.”

Watching neurons talk in a living brain
The only way to look at synaptic density in the brain, is to biopsy nonliving brain tissue. That means there’s no way for researchers to investigate how diseases like Alzheimer’s progress—something that could hold secrets to diagnosis and treatment. To remedy this, a team of Yale University scientists have developed a surgery-free technique to view how well neurons are talking to one another, as they report today in Science Translational Medicine. They call it “synaptic density imaging.”
