Christopher J. Tien, PhD awarded pilot grant
Christopher J. Tien, PhD, assistant professor and lead physicist for Brachytherapy in the Department of Therapeutic Radiology in the Yale School of Medicine, was recently awarded a pilot grant from the American Cancer Society and Yale Cancer Center for his application “Characterization of a novel brachytherapy applicator with dynamic shielding for radiation therapy in cervical cancer.” As Dr. Tien is a clinical physicist, this grant represents his first extramural funding. Other members of the Yale Cancer Center will be key collaborators on the work, specifically: Dr. Emily Draeger, Dr. Jay (Zhe) Chen, and Dr. Shari Damast.

Personalised tracking of radiation doses is becoming a reality
Professor Jun Deng of Yale University School of Medicine has focused his extensive experience in therapeutic radiology and dose risk analysis to create a new system of tracking patient exposure in great detail. Establishing a personal organ dose archive (PODA) to track and accumulate each patient’s organ doses in four dimensions, opens the possibility of using big data techniques to better inform clinicians and the patients themselves.

Professional Spotlight: Taking Ownership: Mohamed Badawi
Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven is part of the nationally recognized Yale New Haven Hospital, and is affiliated with Yale Cancer Center (YCC), one of only 49 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation and the only such center in Connecticut. Mohamed Badawi is a radiologic engineer-physics at Smilow and part of a team of three engineers in the radiation physics department. He gets kudos from his boss. “Mohamed is a key member of our in-house engineering team, well-liked by physicians and staff. He has consistently demonstrated his technical capabilities and dedication in providing timely and high-quality engineering support for our department at the New Haven, Guilford and Hamden campuses,” says Zhe (Jay) Chen Ph.D., chief physicist.

Local DNA Repair Inhibition for Sustained Radiosensitization of High-Grade Gliomas
High-grade gliomas, such as glioblastoma (GBM) and diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), are characterized by an aggressive phenotype with nearly universal local disease progression despite multimodal treatment, which typically includes chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and possibly surgery. Radiosensitizers that have improved the effects of radiotherapy for extracranial tumors have been ineffective for the treatment of GBM and DIPG, in part due to poor blood–brain barrier penetration and rapid intracranial clearance of small molecules. Yale Prostate Cancer Study Shows Newer Implant Therapy Has Fewer Side-Effects/Could Lead to Better Treatment Outcomes
A Yale study of complication rates from two radiation implant therapies for prostate cancer shows that the newer therapy, Palladium-103, has fewer long-term side effects than Iodine-125, an older, more commonly prescribed therapy.
