- 00:00Colorectal cancer is a group of cancers
- 00:03that occur in the colon and the rectum.
- 00:06These cancers arise from the lining of
- 00:08these organs and actually represent
- 00:10the third most common cancer in the
- 00:12United States for both men and women
- 00:15and the third leading cause of cancer
- 00:17death for men and women in the US.
- 00:25Colorectal cancer is in fact preventable.
- 00:28That's exactly why screening is so critical.
- 00:30There are a number of colorectal
- 00:33cancer screening tools,
- 00:34and so the gold standard
- 00:36screening is a colonoscopy.
- 00:38For average risk.
- 00:39People that can happen once every 10 years.
- 00:42Other forms of screening include stool
- 00:45tests that look for blood in the stool,
- 00:48stool tests that look for DNA from cancers.
- 00:56Colorectal cancer screening is critical
- 00:58and for patients with average risk,
- 01:01that means people who don't necessarily
- 01:04have a family history or other risks
- 01:07that predispose them to getting
- 01:09colon cancer should get screened
- 01:11starting at the age of 50 and
- 01:14generally ending around the age of 75.
- 01:17black Americans are at especially an
- 01:19increased risk and some guidelines
- 01:21organizations already recommend.
- 01:23That black Americans get screened starting at
- 01:25the age of 45.
- 01:32Home screening tests
- 01:34do exist for colorectal cancer.
- 01:36These are in the form of either looking
- 01:40for microscopic blood or looking
- 01:42for articles of DNA in the stool,
- 01:45and I'd say especially during covid.
- 01:48These have seen increasing uptake and
- 01:50again this would be talk to your primary
- 01:54care physician or gastroenterologist
- 01:56about what's right for you.
