Dr. Regina Hooley sees patients as part of The Breast Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital and discusses why she chose radiology as her specialty and why breast imaging is so important.

  • 00:00My name is Doctor Regina Hooley.
  • 00:03I'm a radiologist and I'm professor
  • 00:05and vice chair for clinical affairs
  • 00:07and the Department of Radiology
  • 00:09and Biomedical Imaging at Yale.
  • 00:11I oversee radiology operations and
  • 00:13in addition to this I'm also the
  • 00:16division Chief for breast imaging.
  • 00:18The patients that I see are
  • 00:20primarily women who are undergoing
  • 00:22screening for breast cancer.
  • 00:24I also see women who have breast symptoms,
  • 00:27including those women who may be
  • 00:29newly diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • 00:31I chose radiology as a specialty because
  • 00:34radiologists must learn about all kinds
  • 00:36of diseases in all parts of the body,
  • 00:39which I found really interesting.
  • 00:41Most radiologists, however,
  • 00:42eventually choose to focus on
  • 00:44one or two areas because there
  • 00:46is so much to learn and know.
  • 00:49And I chose breast imaging because
  • 00:51breast cancer is very interesting.
  • 00:53It's a very common and significant disease.
  • 00:56I enjoy helping women and I also enjoy
  • 00:58working with women for those patients
  • 01:01who are diagnosed with breast cancer,
  • 01:03it's important to know that these days
  • 01:06breast cancer is a very well treated disease,
  • 01:09and for the most part,
  • 01:11women do very,
  • 01:12very well,
  • 01:13particularly those women whose cancers
  • 01:15are found on screening mammography.
  • 01:17My research is primarily focused
  • 01:20on screening.
  • 01:21I've done most of my research on
  • 01:24supplemental screening ultrasound
  • 01:26and women with dense breasts.
  • 01:28I've also done research on tomosynthesis,
  • 01:31an 3D mammography.
  • 01:32We operate as a team.
  • 01:35Certainly, radiology is a team specialty.
  • 01:38We have a great group of breast imagers.
  • 01:42We all work together, we share our patients.
  • 01:46We have similar.
  • 01:47Styles in diagnosis and work
  • 01:49up so it's a great team.
  • 01:52We also work very closely with
  • 01:53our breast surgeons and our breast
  • 01:55oncologist and radiation oncologist to
  • 01:57optimize treatment for our patients
  • 01:59who are diagnosed with breast cancer.
