Smilow Cancer Genetics & Prevention Program: High-Risk Breast Cancer Clinic

November 04, 2024

As part of the Smilow Cancer Genetics & Prevention Program, the High-Risk Breast Cancer Clinic provides comprehensive breast cancer risk assessment, patient education, screening, and prevention strategies for patients at increased risk of breast cancer. Our multidisciplinary expert team of genetic counselors, genetics clinical coordinators, physicians, and advanced practice providers, work together to create a personalized careplan for each patient based on personal and family history, incorporating genetic testing as indicated. After initial risk assessment, patients who are at increased risk of developing breast cancer can be followed in the High-Risk Breast Cancer Clinic.

What types of patients do we see?

Individuals with:

A strong family history of breast cancer and lifetime risk > 20%

Genetic risks, such as an inherited pathogenic variant in the BRCA1/2 gene or other breast cancer-related genes

• Prior chest radiation as treatment for specific types of cancer under the age of 30, such as Hodgkin’s lymphoma

• A personal history of atypical biopsies, after surgical intervention is complete

What to expect from your appointments:

At your initial visit, you will meet with a member of our interdisciplinary, specialty-trained high-risk breast team and will receive a comprehensive consultation tailored to your individual needs and risk factors. The Physician Lead for the Clinic, Dr. Ellie Proussaloglou, Assistant Professor of Breast Surgery, works closely with the entire cancer genetics team to coordinate up-to-date care based on the latest evidence and national recommendations. We provide a personalized breast cancer risk assessment and a risk-reduction care plan, including recommended imaging, clinical breast exams, prevention medication options, and lifestyle modifi cations. We also discuss the role of risk-reducing surgery, if indicated. Our patients leave their visits with their next imaging and follow up appointments scheduled to assure coordination with their personalized plan of care. We also assist with comprehensive risk-based care outside of breast cancer risk and, frequently, coordinate care with our colleagues in plastic surgery, gynecologic oncology, dermatology, gastroenterology, and/or other specialists for a complete multidisciplinary approach to cancer prevention and surveillance.
