Vicente Diaz, MD, MBA Promoted to Chief of Ophthalmology at Bridgeport Hospital

We are pleased to announce that Vicente Diaz, MD, MBA, has been promoted to Chief of Ophthalmology at Bridgeport Hospital
effective January 1, 2023.

Dr. Vicente Diaz is an ophthalmologist with specialized training in ocular immunology and infectious diseases. In addition to treating cataracts, dry eye, and glaucoma, he treats all forms of autoimmune disease that occur in and around the eye, using
immunomodulatory therapy to modify the immune response. Dr. Diaz was one of the first doctors in Connecticut to provide femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS). He also uses such leading-edge technologies as the ORA aberrometer to obtain the best possible measurements for cataract surgery, and various lens implant models that he can tailor to the patient's needs. He serves as Director of Ophthalmology for the Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital, where he sees the most cases of Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) in Connecticut.

Dr. Diaz received his MD and MBA from Yale University and completed an ophthalmology residency at Yale prior to completing a fellowship in uveitis at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Diaz then joined Eye Surgery Associates where he was an active member of the staff of both Yale New Haven Hospital and Bridgeport Hospital prior to joining our department on a full-time basis nearly 4 years ago. He was appointed Chief of Ophthalmology at Yale Health Plan in 2021, addressing the eye needs of Yale faculty, students, employees, and their families, while maintain a busy anterior segment and uveitis practice.

In addition to his clinical and administrative work Dr. Diaz is a co-investigator on several Food and Drug Administration clinical trials of novel immunomodulatory therapies for inflammatory diseases. He has developed a sutureless and glue-less technique for the surgical treatment of pterygium, a benign tumor related to sun exposure, and is in the process of launching a clinical trial further study it.

Dr. Diaz will assume this important leadership position as Dr. Brian DeBroff will be stepping down to focus on other leadership roles within the YNHHS system. We want to thank Dr. DeBroff for all his hard work while serving as chief for the past 10 years and look forward to working with Dr. Diaz in the future.
