Clinical Care

Overview

Andrew Dhanasopon, MD, is a Yale Medicine thoracic surgeon and assistant professor of surgery at Yale School of Medicine who uses the latest technologies in the surgical treatment of diseases that affect the lungs, esophagus, mediastinum, chest wall, and diaphragm.

Dr. Dhanasopon cares for many patients with cancer at a time in their lives that is often confusing and overwhelming. “It’s important for me to listen to my patients’ goals, and ensure they are fully informed of their disease and all available treatments,” he says. “I work to foster a relationship in which they can trust in my skills and my team to help them through this usually difficult and anxious time.”

Thoracic surgery is always changing and improving, and Dr. Dhanasopon routinely incorporates new technology and modern techniques into his care. He is skilled in the use of minimally invasive surgery, including robotic surgery, video-assisted thorascoscopic surgery (VATS), and navigational bronchoscopy, which utilizes real-time 3D navigation to accurately localize, diagnose and treat lung cancers. He has a particular interest in using minimally invasive techniques to correct a type of chest wall deformity called pectus excavatum. These patients are born with a sunken breastbone and typically undergo repair as teenagers.

Dr. Dhanasopon’s emphasis on utilizing the latest methods and technologies for his patients stems from his background in biomedical engineering. Having a “direct, positive impact on people’s lives though surgery and medical technology” is his passion.
